The film Just Mercy is based on the true story of lawyer Bryan Stevenson who works to defend people who have been wrongly convicted or unfairly sentenced. The film focuses on his fight to overturn the conviction of Walter McMillian, a Black man sentenced to death for a murder he did not commit, while exposing racial injustice within the U.S. criminal justice system.

The Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) is a nonprofit organization founded by lawyer Bryan Stevenson that works to challenge racial and economic injustice in the U.S. criminal justice system. It provides legal representation to people who have been wrongly convicted or unfairly sentenced and works to address issues such as mass incarceration, the death penalty, and the history of racial violence.

Foster is a 2019 HBO documentary that explores the Los Angeles foster care system through the experiences of children, families, social workers, and others involved in the system. It looks at the challenges children face in foster care while highlighting efforts to provide stability, support, and better opportunities for young people.

This toolkit was developed for teachers and educators to help them integrate the film into their own curriculum.
